Setting the Scene

Rederiet Stenersen operates in Northern Europe, transporting liquid cargo with its fleet of 18 oil and chemical tankers. The crew’s daily operations involve brief voyages and even shorter port calls, leaving them with little time to spare. “There is always an urgent task waiting onboard a busy ship,” says Bjarte Hogelid, HSSEQ & Marine Manager at Stenersen.

To help their crew focus on what truly matters onboard, Stenersen chose Navigator Port to simplify port clearance. But just because a system is available doesn’t mean crews will use it. “We challenge every new tool we bring onboard by asking one core question to the users: Is it worth it?” says Bjarte.

Stenersen understands that captains are at sea to navigate and operate their vessels – not to wrestle with new software. That’s why they sent out a survey to learn what they thought about Navigator Port. The results were unclear – 50% of masters were fully satisfied, but the other half did not answer the survey.

Why did half the captains stay silent?

In the hands-on demonstration, the “positive” 50 percent of masters using Navigator Port were acting like ambassadors, showing their colleagues how the tool saves valuable time with each port call. This created an eye-opening moment for the silent half.

After the workshop, Stenersen and the masters decided that Navigator Port would become a standard tool for all vessels. Captains now complete port clearance in 20 minutes instead of hours – with no extra work, no errors, no penalties. Just smooth, hassle-free compliance.
