As a captain for nearly 30 years – seven of them on the SC Connector – I’ve seen how technology has transformed life at sea. I remember the days of endless paperwork, stressful port calls, and the constant challenge of ensuring compliance with work and rest hours.

No tool in the world can solve all this, but a lot has changed since we started using Navigator Port.

I was drowning in paperwork. I used to spend hours filling out forms for each port, collecting data from different crew members, and making sure everything was correct before sending it off to the agent. Waste declarations were particularly frustrating – every port had its own rules, and one small mistake could lead to delays.

Now, crew members enter their own data, and I have everything in one place. What used to take hours now takes minutes, and errors have become rare.

Another game-changer: My full attention is on navigation. We can complete documentation while still at sea, so when we approach port, I’m not stuck with last-minute paperwork. Whether I’m manoeuvring the into port or steering my wooden boat through the waters of Farsund in Norway, I know how crucial it is to focus entirely on the task at hand.

All of us seafarers often work under tight schedules, and planning work and rest hours used to be one of the biggest challenges. Five port calls a day meant tracking crew shifts in Excel and constantly checking for compliance issues. Too often, we wouldn’t spot conflicts until it was too late.

With Navigator Port, planning ahead is much easier. The Chief Officer and Chief Engineer organize their teams, and every crew member knows exactly when to work and when to rest. Fatigue-related risks have decreased significantly, and I’d say: Any ship using Navigator Port operates more safely and efficiently.

After so many years at sea, I know that small changes can make a big difference. With Navigator Port, I spend less time on admin tasks and more time where it matters – navigating, managing the crew, and ensuring safe operations.
