Full Terms & Conditions of Seafarer Stories Competition

CFARER “Show Us Your World – Seafarer Stories”

Terms & Conditions

Promoter. CFARER AS (“CFARER”), majority-owned by DNV; Wilhelmsen Port Services holds a strategic minority stake.

Eligibility. Open worldwide to individuals aged 18+ who are active seafarers at the time of entry. Employees, contractors, and agents of CFARER, DNV, and Wilhelmsen group companies, and their household or immediate family, may submit but are ineligible for prizes. Void where prohibited. Entries from, or on behalf of, persons or entities subject to trade sanctions, embargoes, or export-control restrictions are ineligible.

Public-sector and restricted recipients. Where law, employer policy, public-sector ethics, or anti-corruption rules restrict gifts or prizes, CFARER may withhold, substitute, or decline a prize. No alternative compensation is due.

How to enter. Submit original photos via the official Entry Form with all required verification details. Multiple entries are permitted. Automated or bulk entries are not allowed.

Safety and compliance. Do not film in restricted areas or breach safety or compliance to get a shot. Obey all onboard rules, flag-state law, company policies, and local law. Do not include confidential or operationally sensitive information, cargo documentation, personal data without consent, copyrighted music or footage, or visible third-party logos where removal is not feasible.

Permissions and releases. By submitting, you warrant that you created the content; obtained written employer permission if required; obtained written model and property releases for all identifiable people and non-public spaces; and can provide such releases to CFARER on request.

Content standards. No illegal, unsafe, defamatory, hateful, harassing, or obscene content, and no political campaigning. CFARER may moderate, edit, blur, reject, or remove any entry at any time for any reason.

Selection and judging. A panel from CFARER and Seafarer Social will review entries for relevance, authenticity, clarity and safety, storytelling, and craft, and will select the top five (5) entries as winners. Featuring content does not imply endorsement of any company or practice beyond the stated educational purpose. CFARER’s decisions are final.

Prizes. Five (5) winners will each receive €1,000 (one thousand euros) per winner, or a comparable prize of equal or greater value if logistics or law require. Prizes are non-transferable and non-exchangeable, and are not redeemable for additional cash beyond the stated amount. Where delivery of a cash prize is unlawful or impracticable, including due to public-sector ethics rules, CFARER may withhold, substitute, or decline the prize without alternative compensation.

Taxes and winner responsibilities. Prizes are paid gross. Winners are responsible for all applicable taxes, duties, declarations, and filings in their jurisdiction. CFARER may be legally required to withhold or report taxes and may issue confirmations where required by law.

Verification, sanctions screening, and payment.

  • CFARER may require identity verification and proof of age and employment status.

  • CFARER will conduct sanctions screening and other risk-based checks before payout. No payments will be made to sanctioned persons or into sanctioned jurisdictions.

  • Payment method: SEPA bank transfer within the EEA; otherwise SWIFT or an equivalent digital method at CFARER’s discretion.

  • The recipient account must be in the winner’s own legal name. Payments to third-party or anonymous accounts are not permitted.

  • For payments in currencies other than EUR, the amount may be converted using the European Central Bank reference rate on the payment date. Local bank charges, intermediary fees, and FX spreads may reduce the net amount received.

  • If local law or banking rules prevent cash payment, CFARER may substitute a non-cash prize of equal value or decline payment where substitution is not lawful.

Winner notification. CFARER will notify selected winners via the email provided. If a winner does not respond within five (5) business days, fails eligibility or verification, or cannot lawfully receive the prize, CFARER may select an alternate.

Rights in entries: Exclusive license.
Entrant retains copyright but grants CFARER an exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, transferable, sublicensable, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, distribute, edit (including crop, trim, caption, color-grade, composite, adapt, and translate), publicly perform or display, and create derivative works from the content in any media now known or later developed, for promotional, educational, and commercial purposes. Entrant waives and agrees not to assert moral rights (or similar rights) to the maximum extent permitted by law. CFARER may use entrant’s name, role, a generic vessel description (e.g., “bulk carrier,” not the vessel name), and country for crediting and publicity where feasible and lawful.

No confidentiality. Entries are non-confidential. Do not submit information you are not authorized to share.

Warranties and indemnity. You warrant your entry is original, does not infringe any rights, complies with these Terms and all applicable laws, and was created safely and lawfully. You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless CFARER, its affiliates, partners, and their officers, directors, and employees against any claims, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your entry or your breach of these Terms. To the extent permitted by law, you irrevocably waive any right to injunctive or equitable relief that would restrict CFARER’s use of the content; remedies are limited to monetary damages.

Liability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, CFARER and partners are not liable for any loss, damage, injury, or disappointment arising from participation or the inability to participate, except where caused by CFARER’s negligence or willful misconduct. Nothing excludes liability for fraud or for statutory consumer rights that cannot be excluded.

General. CFARER may modify, suspend, or terminate the competition for events beyond its reasonable control or for legal/compliance reasons. If any term is held invalid, the remainder remains in effect. These Terms prevail over any inconsistent statements in marketing materials.

Data and privacy. CFARER is the data controller; Seafarer Social acts as processor. Personal data is used only to operate the competition, select and announce winners, deliver prizes, and communicate related updates. Lawful basis: performance of a contract (for prize fulfillment) and/or legitimate interests (for minimal payment verification and fraud prevention). Winner data: legal name, contact details, country, age confirmation, bank details (IBAN or SWIFT/BIC + account number), and the tax-responsibility acknowledgment collected via the Entry/Winner Form. Retention: up to 24 months after the competition closes, or longer if required by law or to defend claims. Storage in the EEA or jurisdictions with adequate safeguards and appropriate transfer mechanisms. Data is not sold. Entrants may exercise data rights (access and erasure) subject to legal requirements and to rights already granted in “Rights in entries.” See CFARER’s Privacy Notice [link].

Governing law and jurisdiction. These Terms are governed by Norwegian law. Exclusive venue and jurisdiction: the courts of Oslo, Norway. Participation constitutes acceptance of these Terms.
